From Mom’s LEGO Helper to Serious Play Facilitator: My Journey Begins
Hey there!
My LEGO®️ story started as many parents’ do – surrounded by DUPLO bricks scattered across our living room floor, watching my three young girls build everything from wobbly birthday cakes to towering masterpieces. While they were content to let their imaginations run wild with “free builds,” I found myself increasingly drawn into their world of LEGO – especially when it came to those detailed set instructions. (Let’s be honest, how many parents have “helped” with a build only to find themselves still working on it long after the kids have gone to bed? 
)
As my girls grew, so did their LEGO®️ collection, moving from DUPLO to more complex sets. What started as “helping” them with their projects turned into my own unexpected passion. There was something deeply satisfying about following those step-by-step instructions, using my hands to create something tangible and beautiful. In these structured builds, I found a unique blend of challenge and creativity that spoke to me.
When I first encountered LEGO®️ SERIOUS PLAY®️ (LSP), it was one of those rare “aha!” moments that come along only a few times in life. Here was this brilliant method that transformed my newfound passion into a powerful tool for business transformation. As someone who’s spent years working with teams, I immediately saw the potential: what if we could help people break free from traditional meeting structures and literally build their ideas?
You see, in my experience, some of the biggest challenges teams face aren’t about capabilities or resources – they’re about communication and shared understanding. We’ve all sat through meetings where:
- Great ideas get lost in translation
- Quieter voices go unheard
- Complex challenges feel overwhelming
- Team members struggle to align on vision
- Following the “instructions” doesn’t always work
That’s where the magic of LSP comes in. There’s something remarkable about watching a reserved team member light up as they explain their model, or seeing a group have their “click moment” when they combine their individual builds into a shared story.
Becoming a certified LSP facilitator wasn’t just a career move for me – it was about combining two of my greatest passions: helping teams thrive and building with LEGO®️ bricks. (Yes, I still have my personal collection, and no, we don’t use those in workshops… though I’m often tempted! 
)
In these newsletters, I’ll be sharing stories from the workshop room, insights about the method, and glimpses into how teams are using LSP to tackle real-world challenges. I promise to keep it real, relevant, and maybe even a little playful.
Next week, I’ll take you behind the scene of our Facilitator Training. We attended a #legoseriousplay workshop while we learned the skills to facilitate. Going through the process of Pose A Question, Build, Share, and Reflect, allowed us to learn from our own models. What we learned will surprise you!
